How to shoot movies for use with ArKaos software

Problem:

Things to know when shooting movies for use in ArKaos software

Solution:

1. Why shoot movies instead of stills?

ArKaos software does a great job of adding interest, life - animation - to your still images, but the game is raised to another level when you start working with movies. Even the shortest and most basic movie clips will boost your VJing, especially when used with ArKaos' more video-friendly features. Here's some pointers based on my experience of working with ArKaos software and video...

2. Cameras

You don't need expensive video gear. My current set includes clips that I shot on Nokia mobile phones, various Sony Cybershots, webcams, a JVC SVHSC camcorder, a Canon Hi8 camcorder, and DV camcorders from Canon, JVC and Sony. If you're a musician, think of it as being like sampling - it's more interesting if you mix and match your sources! You will learn to love each camera in its own right...sometimes portability and spontaneity are greater virtues than image quality!

Carry your camera EVERYWHERE.

3. Resolutions

Because you might be shooting in less than ideal conditions, and with a camera that maybe isn't the best around, you should always shoot at the highst quality the camera will allow. That will ensure you get the best possible image, and it gives you more options later. You can always compress movies afterwards...this leads on to another point...

4. Storage space

If you're serious about this, and you want high-quality movies, don't resist spending money on memory for your camera. Maybe it uses Memory Sticks, maybe it uses Compact Flash, Smart Media, whatever - get the largest storage cards possible! You don't want to run out of space at a critical moment, and you don't want to be swapping between small cards all the time. My CyberShot has a 256MB Memory Stick and a 512MB Compact Flash card... this gives me about 35 minutes of video at the highest resolutions... I very rarely run out of space on a day out, and I don't have to carry spare cards.

5. Images

Once you're familiar with ArKaos VJ, and you understand the things it can do with images, then you'll start to use a camera differently. You'll start shooting for ArKaos - small objects, closeups, textures, simple geometric shapes, lights...these are all things that suit the ArKaos work ethic. You'll start looking at shapes and colours and visualisng what you can do with them in ArKaos - something that doesn't traditionally make a 'good' movie or a 'good' photo can be great for ArKaos!

Small objects can look totally surreal when they're thrown up on a big screen. Toys are great for this, with their bright primary colours and often simple shapes. Have fun as people interpret your motivation for using such childlike images!

6. Technique

Even static objects can be great subjects for movies - they might not be mobile, but your camera is; move around them. Zooms also add movement, although most digital cameras can't zoom while shooting in movie mode; you have to stop recording, then zoom, then resume recording. It also saves editing time if you try to edit while shooting - I try to shoot clips between 5-10 seconds in length. Be aware of lighting - it has such a strong effect on the clarity and colour of your images; I'm not saying you can't use dark and murky images, just remember that's what they are - dark and murky.

Whether things should be in focus or not is a matter of opinion - frankly it's never bothered me either way!

7. Editing

When I can get away with it, I use nothing more complex than QuickTime Pro to prepare my movies. In QuickTime Pro you can trim movies and delete unwanted audio tracks (because I'm often running audio from my PowerBook during my VJ set, I don't want sound from the movies popping up in the middle of my songs!). You can also do some neat tricks like using the 'Edit/Add to Selection & Scale' command to stretch movies to fit a certain length.

If I need more editing features, I'll edit my clips in iMovie. I do use Final Cut Express for other types of video work, but I've never needed it to prepare material for ArKaos. Keep it simple.

8. Export/compression

QuickTime Pro can export to different movie formats, image sizes, frame rates, and so on...I like to keep my movies quite small to lighten the load during live shows. Most projectors aren't very high resolution anyway, so there's not much point in using high-res movies. If you're using iMovie, it's a no-brainer because of the Share/QuickTime presets - I always use the 'Compress for CD-ROM' preset for movies that are going to end up in ArKaos. Remember to delete those audio tracks!

9. Using layers

You can get amazing textural effects by layering movies over each other in ArKaos. This is where the simpler images can come into their own - too complex and it gets swamped. Use the Mask and Copy Mode menus in the visual info dialog box to decide what parts of your movies will be transparent. Explore these settings...the Band Reject/Band Pass option is especially useful. Use "Layer priority", "Always in front" if you want one movie to act as a 'frame' across several background movies. Resize and reposition movies for picture-in-picture and split screen effects.

10. Movie behaviour in ArKaos

You can continue to 'edit' your clips in ArKaos - use the "Movie Loop", "Play Selected Frames" option to 'crop' your movie's start and end points in a non-destructive fashion. Use the "Movie Speed" options to change the movie's speed, position, and direction. Even better, map these to MIDI and use a hardware controller to 'scratch' the video.

Things to remember:

  • carry your camera everywhere
  • experiment
  • and (most important) have fun and improvise during your performances!

Problem:

I'm trying to register my ArKaos VJ or GrandVJ software from the registration dialog box at startup, the software tries to connect to the ArKaos web site during a long time but nothing happens..

Solution:

Recent operating system may integrate firewall protections which can by default prevent an application to connect to the internet and communicate with a database. That's why we recommend to manage your license and serial numbers from your customer account page on our web site.

From there you can retrieve your license information and obtain a serial number to activate the software on your computer.

Solution:

Just add the desired upgrade to your cart and proceed to checkout as for any product. After payment, your new license will be available in your customer account to generate serial numbers for the latest software version.

As for the software itself, there is no special upgrade installer to download, you can get the full software installer for the latest version at any time from the product page.

How our electronic licenses work

How our Electronic License work

Main computer: One ArKaos software license is intended for registering the software on one main computer. We offer the ability to generate additional serials from one license because the Machine ID Code may change when hardware modifications are made to the main computer and therefore a new serial number is needed.

For example, a license has been bought for a computer, the first serial has been obtained and the software is activated on this computer. One year later the main hard drive is replaced (or the motherboard etc..), the software protection mechanism will consider that it is a different system and generate a new Machine ID Code. The user can use the extra serial from his license to reactivate the software on this computer.

Replacement computer: Each serial number can only be used on a particular computer and cannot be transferred to another one, because the Machine ID Code will then be different. Therefore, if a user stops using a computer and wish to activate the software on a replacement computer, it will be necessary to use another of the additional serial numbers from the license.

Second computer: The ArKaos software license is intended for registering the software on one main computer. Installing ArKaos software on multiple computers require multiple licenses.

The additional serials that ArKaos provides with one license are meant to be used in case of hardware modifications or upgrades leading to a Machine ID Code modification on the main computer. The license agreement does not permit the serials to be used to activate the software on multiple machines. Doing so is working against ArKaos intent of servicing its customers in case of a hardware failure or replacement, whilst restricting non-permitted use of the software.

Using the additional serials to install ArKaos on multiple computers will also increase the risk of running out of serials for the main computer, thus requiring the purchase a new license to allow generating new serials and continue to use the software.

Restrictions: Our protection system keeps track of the serial numbers generated from a license and these CANNOT be removed or replaced after they have been used to activate the software. This means that when the maximum serials count from a license has been reached it is necessary to purchase a new license to to allow generating new serials and continue to use the software on the main computer.

One single license allows maximum 3 serials, you can activate the software 3 times from one license before it is full.

Testing the software: DO NOT generate a serial number and activate the software on a computer where you will use the software temporarily as that serial will remain in your license and will not be removed. If you would like to test the performance of the software on different computers and configurations before deciding which will be your main computer, please take advantage of the software demo.

When using the software in demo mode you can use all effects, try all screen configurations and use any controller, import as many visuals as you wish and there is no time limitation: the demo does not expire. The only difference with the activated application is that you can't save your work and a 'DEMO' banner appears randomly above the visuals on the output and preview.

We always provide 'full' software installers, any limitation from the demo are removed by activating the software with a valid serial number: you do not need to download and install another 'full' software installer after you purchase a license.

Where can I download the last ArKaos VJ installers? (Discontinued software)

Problem:

I still have a license valid for ArKaos VJ but I can't find the software CD anymore, where can I download the installers?

Solution:

You can download the last ArKaos VJ versions from the links below. However since ArKaos VJ relies on other components from your system (QuickTime, Media Player, DirectX, Flash, etc..) you may encounter problems using it on recent, up to date systems. That's why we do not provide anymore technical support for ArKaos VJ.

ArKaos VJ 3.5.1 (MIDI and DMX):
Mac: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_51_FC1.dmg
PC: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_51_FC1.zip

ArKaos VJ 3.6.1 (MIDI and DMX) - last stable version:
Mac: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_6_1_FC1.dmg
PC: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_6_1_FC1.zip

ArKaos VJ 3.6.5 (MIDI and DMX) - last beta version:
Mac: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_6_5_beta2.dmg
PC: ftp://ftp.arkaos.net/pub/ArKaos/ArKaos_VJ_3_6_5_beta4.exe
Release Notes: PDF Document

Note: The ArKaos VJ 3.6.5 beta for Mac has no installer. You must first download and install the ArKaos VJ 3.6.1 for Mac then download the ArKaos VJ 3.6.5 beta 2, open the .dmg file and copy the content of the "ArKaos VJ 3.6.5 beta 2" folder in your ArKaos VJ 3.6.1 installation folder. The ArKaos VJ 3.6.5 beta 2.app will be installed next to the ArKaos VJ 3.6.1 FC 1.app and the folder "FreeFramePlugIns" will be replaced. You can now use both app versions.

[Mac] NuVJ crashes at startup

Problem:

NuVJ crashes at startup

Solution:

The system Flash Player has been updated and it is no more compatible with the NuVJ software version, you need to install a standalone compatible Flash Player just for NuVJ.

Click here to download the player, then decompress it into your NuVJ installation directory.

You should then have a "Flash Player" directory beside your "NuVJ.app" application bundle.

NuVJ should then start correctly and Flash files playback will work again.

Reactivate the software on a new / upgraded computer

$

Problem:

I have previously registered my ArKaos software and successfully activated it on my computer. Now I have a new / upgraded computer and I need to activate the software again.

Solution:

You can obtain a new serial number from your license for a computer that is replacing the previously registered computer.

To do so, proceed as follows:

  • log-in to your customer account page thanks to your e-mail and password
  • go to the "My Orders" page from the menu on the right
  • click "Your Codes" to show the license details and previously generated codes
  • under the existing codes, clik the button "Request a serial"
  • use your Machine ID code to request a serial number in your software license
  • use your serial number in the software to activate it and remove the limitations from the Demo version

The Machine ID Code is a 8 capital letters code identifying the ArKaos software installed on your computer (it looks like UTGRDESZ). You can find the Machine ID code in your ArKaos software, in the Preferences window under the Registration Tab (click for more help).

Remark:
To prevent any abuse, one license is limited to one computer and can generate a maximum of three serial numbers. Once you have reached this limit you will need to order a new license if you need additional serial numbers.

For more information about how our software license works please refer to the related support article.

[PC] How can I reset the software to default preferences?

$
0
0

Problem:

[PC] My software systematically crashes at startup
[PC] My registered software asks for a serial at each startup
[PC] How can I reset the software to default preferences?

Solution:

Startup problems can be caused by corrupted Preferences files. Sometimes you may also have configured the software in a way that you cannot modify anymore (i.e. starting full screen automatically on a display which is no more connected to the computer). Most of the time, deleting the software Preferences files is enough to fix the issue, the software will create new, clean Preferences files at the next start.

To find and delete your ArKaos software Preferences files, first quit the software, then

For GrandVJ, browse to:

  • On Windows XP : \Documents and Settings\"YourUserName"\Application Data\GrandVJ
  • On Windows Vista and Seven : \Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Roaming\GrandVJ

Then delete the following files:

  • GrandVJ_preferences.xml
  • GrandVJ_settings.xml
  • log.txt

For MediaMaster, browse to:

  • On Windows XP : \Documents and Settings\"YourUserName"\Application Data\ArKaos MediaMaster
  • On Windows Vista and Seven: \Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Roaming\ArKaos MediaMaster

Then delete the following files:

  • ArKaos MediaMaster_preferences.xml
  • ArKaos MediaMaster_settings.xml
  • log.txt

Note: Relpace "YourUserName" in the path by Windows account user name.

Then launch the software again.

Now all your setting should be in default status. You will need to enter your serial number again to unlock the software. You can retrieve your serial number in your customer account, once logged in to the ArKaos web site, on the "My orders" page.
